Here's the thing about the breathing... we just don't know what's causing it. I've been going to my doctor for over a year now and we've tried several different treatments that haven't done anything to help. It's been getting worse as time goes on, so I'm assuming that it's something in the air. I've been to specialists. I've had tests done. I'm seeing another specialist in two weeks. It's my conclusion, based on what I know about my body, that it's probably a combination of dust, altitude, and the dry air.

That's why I thought that Colorado might make a difference. Having never lived in Colorado, only gone through it, I didn't know that it was much the same as Albuquerque. My husband, bless his heart, has lived in Colorado, but doesn't pay attention to things like air quality, humidity, and things like that. He's a hermit; he wouldn't know humidity if it came up and bit him. But he's mine and I love him.

That's why I asked the question. Is that not what these boards are for?

Completely random and off topic advice: If you haven't yet, you might want to try a 30 day long elimination diet such as a Whole30 (Paleo) or Clean (by Dr Alejandro Junger, and you don't need to buy any of the supplements)-- eliminating certain foods, namely gluten and dairy (and I am not technically allergic to either, according to allergy tests) has made a WORLD of difference for my fibro and helped to virtually eliminate my husband's asthma. My closest friend (a Duke trained MD) is who got me started 3 years ago with an elimination diet and those are the two eating plans that she recommended.

You might find your issues might be food related rather than environment related-- just a thought. Hope it helps!

Yes, I have IBS and I know that it's all connected so when I started having trouble breathing, I attempted an extreme elimination diet -- trust me, it was extreme -- to no avail.

wscotting,

When you say you have trouble breathing - any chance that when you do have an allergy attack or get a cold etc. does it turn into bronchitis?

The reason I ask is because once you get bronchitis it seems that the slightest illness and you get it again.

About 15 years ago I had this happen and I accidently came across a way to break the cycle. It turned out that I was a shallow breather most of my life. After spending about 18 months in a never ending cycle of bronchitis I happened to try water exercise at the YMCA. Terrified of water (even in the shallow end of the pool) I decided to ask if the YMCA offered adult swim classes.

At 49 I took my first adult swim lesson and 16 classes later I swam the length of the pool overcoming a life long fear. Swimming four strokes before taking a breath of air actually forced me to learn to breathe deeply. The more I practiced the stronger my breathing became and I never had another issue with bronchitis.

I am thinking high altitude might make it even harder if you are a shallow breather. So, perhaps you might want to consider something like swimming to increase your lung capacity over time.

At the time I learned to swim, the YMCA did not offer adult swim classes. But, since another non swimmer and I were interested in taking a semi private swim class once a week they arranged with an instructor who understood an adult fear of the water to teach us to swim. It turned out that half the adult population can't swim! (And all that time I thought I was the only adult in the world that could not swim). They now offer adult semi private swim lessons at the Y on a regular basis because the class is so popular.

Swimming is an excellent way to strengthen your lungs and to learn slow rhythmic deep breathing. And if you are a non swimmer like I was - overcoming a fear you have had all of your adult life is a wonderful feeling! Not having to deal with bronchitis for the past 15 years was an added bonus.
