I moved to Maryland about 10 months ago and now Im moving back to Kansas. When I moved here I filled my car with things I needed. It wasn't packed as tight as I could have got it but I have been back to Kansas and brought more stuff back to Maryland since. I also bought several items that I don't want to get rid of.
I will be selling or giving all of my large furniture away. I am still a little worried about getting everything in my car. There isn't enough to make it worth while to rent a truck and tow my car even if I keep the furniture (I bought cheap stuff to get by). I looked into mailing some items but that is going to cost a lot. I looked into renting a trailer but even if my car could tow it, it would cost as much to rent one and take it the 1200 miles as it would be to buy it. I also looked into getting a cargo box to go on top of the car for a little extra storage but my car doesn't have a rack. I found a few cargo bags that say they don't need racks but Im a little worried about how they will stay on the car and stay together while doing 80 mph.
Any suggestions on how to get a maybe 2-3 extra boxes that far?

Try the Greyhound (or other interstate) Bus lines. They used to ship boxes to wherever their buses went.

A 5 x 8 U-Haul trailer won't work for you? It has 200 cu-ft interior cargo space.

There are no per mile charges for trailer rentals.

OP, I've been able to pack a lot by thinking in terms of filling in the spaces, rather than with traditional boxes. For example, put small items in shoes (for me that was my computer thumb drives and such), put the shoes on the floor of one side of the back seat. pile them so there are no spaces. Put blankets, towels, or clothing on the other side. I used clear contractor bags for clothing and didn't fill them all the way up. That way, I could bend the clothing or stuff it into remaining spaces.

DO NOT allow piles to exceed the level of the windows for safety!

This method is not wonderful at all for any trip exceeding three days and where there is a lot of in and out of the car, but it might work for your purposes.

Tip: COVER the "piles" with a bed blanket so that if you are parked in a parking lot, people won't be looking at your stuff. I topped mine with fleece blankets. If you tuck those in, they will also help keep items in place.

This type of packing works better with a 4-door, but I've done it with 2.

I've also packed using two layers of clear contractor bags (used to line barrels at concerts and such) and filled those with "whatever" -- pay attention to what can have weight on it and what can't. They can also protect a pile of books but beware that the bag may burst if you try to carry it in the house that way.

Zea mays, renting that trailer in Maryland and dropping it off in Kansas costs over $400, I can buy a trailer cheaper than that. That is why I was asking for suggestions.

Hannah7, I did have to change registration but I didn't do it until I had to renew my tags. I costs a lot more in Maryland than it does in Kansas. You also have to do a safety inspection and an emissions test. The state of Maryland does the emissions test and was not a problem. A certified mechanic has to do the safety inspection. They charge a fee for the inspection and then tell you what they want to do. I went to 5 different garages with my 2007 kia that I never had problems with and got different quotes for what they want to do and went with the cheapest one. If you are moving to Maryland I suggest asking around for anyone that knows an honest mechanic or even a shady one that will cut you a deal.

Meemur, I think that is what I am going to try. I thought about putting small things like shoes under the seats and books and in with the spare tire. I have a lot of things I am taking to goodwill. I will pack the things I cant part with first then add what I can after that.
