I've collected many items over the years that are precious to me - mostly smaller things, though I do have some furniture pieces that are antiques and/or family heirlooms that I treasure. I don't generally give those sorts of things away, so I don't really know how that would feel.

But I have given away tons of "every day" furniture and items - before each move specifically - and I've never regretted it a bit. Now that I'm older and my kids are adults, I've also started giving them some family heirlooms as well, and I've never regretted that a bit.

Once something is out of my house, it's out of my mind.

Amen, sister. I've even given away furniture that my father refinished, or my great grandmother sat in, which sort of bothered me, but not enough to continue moving it all around the country and shoving it in the attic.
I had an ex DIL who was military, as was my son. That girl could have their entire household boxed up in half a day. How freeing a feeling it must be to be unencumbered by possessions.

Sort of.

I mean, I marvel at people who are able to do so but then again, I think it is a function that as we age, we just build up more things. As I said in my diary (a volume or two back), it's like the difference in books and notes between the arriving freshman and the graduating senior (if one keeps their books, that is).

BUT being in the process of moving and having so much stuff, I do marvel, even envy.

There's not much more I can readily dump that hasn't already been done, isn't on the list yet, in the time left. But once in the new place, then it is time to take a look, figure out how to "re-program" and try to do it smaller, lesser.

Though to do it smaller, lesser may mean just storing the bulky stuff off site with something of a drop in the bucket.

But now that I actually have to move all this stuff......I do marvel.

I understand what your meaning, we will be moving 1000 miles away in a year or so and plan to sell about everything. Mostly I'm happy because our furniture really needs to be gone and new would be great but there's things such as a china hutch from my grandma that is so large I could not take. It tough, but I couldn't pay to move it, we will barely be able to take our necessities.
