Personally, this is how I would handle this situation and actually have handled it in the past. Do all the research you can online then pick the complexes that meet your requirements. Email and call these complexes. I say email and call because then you'll have a copy of what they've told you. When you call, you may talk to a different person or even the same person, but may get different information so you can point out what they've already told you. After that, pick say 3-5 places that you like best. When your transfer happens, find an extended stay place to live in and go visit the complexes that you've picked out. Doing it this way, I have never spent more than 2 weeks in an extended stay place or a motel/hotel.
I've got it narrowed down to one place right now, and am willing to hit anything within a 5 mile radius of where I'll be working.
I figure if it doesn't seem right at first, I could always hunker down for the 6-12 month lease and then use the time in between to find some place a little more to my liking.
Establish a beach-head and fan out from there.
