Long time no post here for me, but I'm back! lol

I have a friend who's moving from California to Delaware in a few months. how much $ do you think he would reasonably need to safely afford driving here, apartment deposit (studio apt), and other expenses? By our calculations he'll have around $3200 around the time he wants to move -- is that enough to start off?

Really need some guidance/advice here. He's a good friend of mine and I'm trying to help him, but since I've never moved, I don't know much about costs. I've thought of: apartment deposit, car insurance, health insurance, $ to drive here, bills like utilities, water, etc (what's usually included in an apartment?)? I realize this is a loaded question but I hope I can find some guidance.

Maybe you should move this to the California forum.

First of all, California's a BIG state. Where is he moving to? Does he have a job? What does he do? What's his monthly budget?

When I moved I was quoted an hourly rate and a mileage rate. To move my 2 bedroom apt approx 5 miles away cost me $1500 for 4 guys for about 6 hours.

My one suggestion.. when figuring in the cost of gas, food, motels, deposit and misc. expenses.. always figure in an extra 20 percent.

It's better to be safe then sorry and that 20 percent can help account for taxes... emergency money if you break down, price increases you weren't aware of.. or just a nice extra cushion .

Apartments go to Apartments.com - Free Nationwide Apartment Search with the Most Visual Rental Listings Online. and do a search for the area he is moving to. Compare three or four and you will get an idea of what is needed for that.

Car insurance if he has a current company that is national he can call and get a quote for change of location.

Is he moving all his stuff in personal vehicle or moving van? If driving penske or uhaul van and towing car I can tell you it will be at least $2000 plus gas. If its going to be just his vehicle then just figure out his gas. Mapquest google or whatever can tell you the miles and divide by the mpg of vehicle and multiply by $3.50(assumption of gas price average is a bit high to be safe)

Also have to figure places to stay along the way unless he is going to sleep in the car.

utilities all depend on what is included in apartment rent

hope this helps a bit
