Can you put boxes in a car that you are shipping across the country? I have an Outback wagon and I could possibly fit quite a few boxes in it. I am not sure if that is allowed though. Does anyone know offhand?

If you ship it on a car carrier, No.
If that put it inside the moving van, Yes

I shipped a sedan from the west coast to the east coast and filled the trunk completely. Can't tell if putting boxes into the car itself would have been OK with the carrier. I didn't even consider that, perhaps because I didn't want those boxes to attract anyone's attention.

It's considered illegal unless the company transporting the vehicle has motor carrier operating authority to transport household good and personal effects across state lines.

If the carrier is stopped at a state port of entry or for a random DOT or police inspection, the vehicle and it's contents could be impounded. Both the customer and the company could be fined and the carrier could eventually lose their operating authority.

It's actually dangerous to transport items which aren't permanently attached. It's like moving an inflated lead tennis ball. I've seen windows knocked out, steering columns destroyed and trunks that looked like someone hit them with a hammer from inside for 3000 miles.
