Sure sounds like coastal California to me. You'll get more of the mountains and diverse geography in central & northern CA. LA area has some accessible hills and mountains too.
Looking to relocate ..here are some of our ideas..we know we cant have them all
Needs to be a warmer climate then Illinois
Needs to be near a downtown with newer restaurants and bars and shopping. I appreciate older historic downtowns but don't want to live in them
would like to be near boatable water
we like mountains, trees, lakes, ocean, outdoor activities.
safe growing area that is clean and well kept
any input would be greatly appreciated
Here are a few questions I think you still need to answer:
What can we afford? (Sure CA is nice but also expensive)
Do we still want 4 seasons? (Again CA is nice but doesn't have a fall or winter)
What kind of mentality to I want? Am I comfortable moving to and raising my children in the "deep south"?
Maybe something like Utah or Idaho would be nice. Has good winters, nice summers, mountains and lakes, trees (would have to do without the ocean here) or Virginia which has most of these plus the ocean.
Northeastern areas of the City of Alburquerque (example zip code 87059) have it all, lots of new shopping and restaurants, lovely views, great weather and really reasonable housing prices. There are homes in the Sandia mountains "off the grid" and there are also regular housing developments with greenspace and hiking trails.
It's Phoenix for sure. Everything but the water, but there are some lakes. Only a few hour's drive to San Diego. Everyone else is moving here. You may as well come along too.
In order of moderate climates and crime. And my favorites: Boise, Reno and Spokane. Basically with 4 seasons also and not too expensive to live to boot. Colorado Springs might also be good. Have fun researching, I did.

When you relocate anywhere you go where the work is and where you can afford to live on the wage your new job (that you have lined out before you move) will pay.
