That is what my family did when they moved from NE to CA (during WWII) They were VERY fortunate, but it was still hard.

Unthinkable now!

What is your question? Yes, of course it would be foolhardy to make a major move in today's world without a job at the other end. That or have enough saved to make the move.

Several people, usually leaving Florida and New Jersey, have stated an intention in the Georgia forum to do just that (even people with children).

In the 20'th century when the USA was #1 you could do it. In today's lousy economy the wages and real estate prices are out of line. You need connections or you are taking a BIG chance!

lol My husband and I are moving without jobs lined up this August. We are not in the sort of field where a company would be willing to hire us until we are physically living locally. We have a good sized nest egg built up, and we will be renting a cheap apartment that we could easily afford with one of us only working part time. Maybe we are naive, but it's what we are doing...however there's no way I could do this if we had kids. We're two healthy, educated, employable adults...there is no excuse for us to not find some sort of work.

We actually moved from NY to Harrisburg in '94-95 without jobs. Our very nice (if old) townhouse was only $550 a month (we paid more for a shoebox on Long Island).
We did both have four temp jobs each and the pay was terrible. However, living was cheaper and in the end I had an offer of a full time job but we moved back to NY.

I do not suggest this if you are moving to a place that is expensive or have to pay a mortgage, however.
If you are are young or without kids, I say go for it.

My husband and I have done this a few times. We were quite adventurous in our younger days. The worst part was that we always had two big dogs and two cats to deal with.

WE did it and had a small child. We had no choice. It was either move out of state or go to a shelter. It worked out fine, but I shudder at the alternative. It didn't hurt that my husband has a trade.

Welcome to the new American economy. My wife and I aren't planning to have kids in the near future, either, for similar reasons. Today, if you want to be able to live well and feel a sense of economic security, it almost seems as though children are only for the rich. Today's young people also face the spectre of increasingly insurmountable student loans.

I've done this a bunch of times in the past and will be doing so again in the very near future. It's fun. It's always worked out just fine. I should point out however that I am young and have no children. If that were not the case, perhaps I wouldn't be so risky.
