Is there anyway to drive a car with one adult and children following or leading the other adult who drives the truck? Or maybe I missed it and that's what you are doing. Seems like it would be less stress for the adult in the truck to have someone, maybe with a hand radio, helping with lane changes, and not having to deal with kids while drive the truck.
It also gives some flexibility if the truck breaks down, take the kids to a hotel in the car.
Yes I am driving our SUV with 1 kid and both dogs and my husband will drive the moving truck and take the other kid for company
We moved from CA to TX this summer, also with 2 small children (and a cat) and used a 26ft Penske truck with a diesel engine. We also towed our SUV with it and then I drove our car. We has ZERO problems with the truck, it ran great and as long as we stopped at gas stations like Luv's or Pilots that were designed mainly for semi's we were fine. We have had negative experiences with U-Haul, along with some of our friends. You can also estimate your fuel costs on the Penske website for whatever truck you rent. We did and it was pretty much right on the money for us.
One thing I would definitely suggest to do is buy a set of walkie talkies for y'all to use while driving. Rather than relying upon spotty cell phone service you can use those to communicate. MUCH easier and actually fun, too. Good luck!
We just moved from Denver to southeast Kansas a couple of weeks ago. We had a 15' U Haul truck and pulled our car on a 4 wheel toter. Also had 2 cats in a carrier in the cab with us. We had no problems, and got excellent mileage. Granted, there are not many hills across Kansas. Everything was wonderful until we got here and lost the key to the U Haul. (Got a replacement made for $4 at a Chevy dealer in town.)
I recently made a Penske reservation for a friend. They give a AAA discount - so if you're a member, you'll save about 12 percent. If you don't have AAA but would like to, the savings will more than pay for your membership.
Also, I made the reservation through the online "chat." Originally I was just asking for help there, but when I mentioned I would finish the reservation online by myself, the fellow came up with an additional 5% discount. When I went in to the Penske location to pay, the man there added a hand truck at no cost.
My friend was pleased with the truck, which had only 10,000 miles on it. However, she found the seat very uncomfortable.

.
^^ I second this suggestion. One can use the AAA savings at a hotel to help pay for its membership cost, but considering cross-state travel including one's own car, a little extra coverage is also piece of mind....
