Have friends who have relocated from various areas in the U.S., and my 'phone book' sure shows a lot of different area codes. Just seems like it's much easier to keep your number.

I don't plan to change my Cell (I'm cell only) when I move.

Did get "Corrected" last time i was in NH, and gave my Atlanta Number 678....

The person corrected me, you mean 978 .. (a area code in Massachusetts)

I said NO 678... I know my phone number....

Keep your old number until you have the energy to change your number to your new area code. Then, notify everyone of your new number. It's easier than explaining why you live in place X, but your phone number is for another city 2000 miles away.

Switch, local plumbers, etc. will not call you back when they think you are 2000 miles away, and if they do and know you are visiting or used to higher rates then they will charge you accordingly.

When I go from CA to TN it is hard to get return calls, and often they say they did not call back because it seemed 'weird' I could call from that area code. And if they did they gave me what they considered a rate I would pay being from CA, even though I am from a rural part of CA that is not that expensive.

I have had the same cell number for more than 15 years and I will not change it no matter where we live.

You can keep your own number. People who think your area code defines where you live are living in the last century. In my work I make a lot of phone calls, but only to people in NC and I see area codes from all over the country.

We changed our phone numbers when we moved, but DH and were not big cell phone users and our kids were going to be getting cell phones so we changed to local numbers that are in sequence. That's the only reason we changed. My sister has been here over 7 years and has never changed her number.

I've never experienced this, but it would seem like this "area code discrimination" would happen more often in a small town.
