True, but back in my student days, if I found a couch with solid structure, I stripped it down, cleaned it, left it in the sun, and then re-upholstered it cheaply. I can remember making several cushions from scrap foam and covering that with towels from garage sales. When it was time to move, I cut it down, again, and put it in the dumpster.
Thank you for all of your input. I decided to mix it up. There are few deals on furniture so I bought a new office desk and chair as I work at home and 1 year seems long and short at the same time. I am going to skimp out on the bedroom furniture and go to ikea to buy some kitchen and storage stuff. I don't know if I can stop myself from buying stuff during cyber Monday though...
Another thing you can look into is putting a hitch on your car and renting a small uhaul utility or cargo trailer. This will really depend on the size of your car and how much the engine can handle. When you get closer to moving out of state, you can look to see if it's more cost effective to sell everything and pack up the rest in your car and buy all new stuff or to rent a trailer and move all that you have to the new place. Also, don't forget that you can use the roof of your car with a roof bag.
May as well since you'll be getting rid of everything anyway. You can get cheap stuff at thrift stores and garage sales. If you're near a college area, even better--you can get stuff for free. Just get what you need and enjoy your time outside of your apartment.
