I'm moving cross country at about $1 per pound. I'm evaluating my DVD collection. Do I keep some? All? None? Do I keep Disney movies that may never be watched again just because they aren't always available? I have kids ages 11+ with no plans for grandbabies anytime soon.
I moved mine, in the cases as I like to store them that way on the shelves. The total weight was minimal compared to furniture, appliances, etc. I also mailed them through media mail with the US post office--real cheap! And I requested signature on the receiving end--mine, just to make sure they were not left t the curb or stolen.
I say keep them. Ask your kids for help deciding which ones they know for sure they won't ever watch. My youngest watched some movies so many times he probably still knows the dialogue.
Why don't you throw them on EBay as a bulk price deal. Most of my DVDs are in a big giant folder. With plasti CD sleeves.
But I'm slowly putting them all on Flixter or ITunes.
The times I've moved long distances, I've kept the movies that are hard to replace as well as my favorite movies. I've done the moving on my own though so I wasn't paying anybody else so much per pound to move them. If I would have been paying somebody else to move me, I probably would have gotten rid of more DVDs, but still not all of them.
It depends on how many you have. If I was moving across country, I'd choose only a limited number to take.... maybe 100? I wouldn't take the cases.
