Quotes from legit places have been between $3,000 and $4,000... I decided to rent a truck and tow my car. The road trip will be great memories I hope!
That is our plan. We are going with Budget and rent a 16' truck, maybe bigger. It was $700 or so. Estimating gas around $300 probably less. Ohio to southern Florida. We are driving it straight, other then a couple stops for bathroom breaks. We will pack our meals to save time also with less stops. 2-3 months away!

I will check in once my move is done, I'm heading out on 5/5! I'm going with Penske, it was only about $100 cheaper than Budget. I also used a AAA discount, if you have access to one Penske accepts them, I didn't notice that on Budget. So my total for a 16 ft. Truck with the car carrier and tax/fees is $1022. I hope all goes well for you and for me!!
It costed me ~$2300 when I moved my 1BD/BA from DFW to DC. They moved it from my storage unit to my new apartment. Company was called Shipsmart. I highly recommend them for small moves.
Don't get suckered into paying deposits/upfront fees. I've moved several times in the last 4 years and always paid when my items were delivered.
Jumping into this convo 2 years after OP published the question, but wanted to throw a few tips out there:
1. We've heard a lot of horror stories about long distance moving and rates skyrocketing once the truck arrives. Movers threaten to not unload unless you pay double the first quoted amount, or worse. Don't ever hire a moving company if anything seems out of the ordinary or if the salesperson on the phone gets pushy.
3. We build a moving cost calculator for questions just like this, it takes into account how far you're moving, what size your move is and if you want to drive or not. Take a look and make sure your quote lines up with the estimate - it's based on hundreds of other completed moves, so your price should fall close to the estimate it spits out: https://moving101.hireahelper.com/mo...st-calculator/
4. The previous posters in this thread already figured this out, but, it's usually a lot cheaper to rent a truck or shipping container (PODS or 1-800-Pack-Rat, etc.) than to pay one full service, interstate company to do it all for you.
Disclaimer: I do work for a nationwide mover marketplace called HireAHelper, but I'd rather you book the right move for your situation than get another customer. Our moving cost calculator shows costs on all sorts of services besides ours. Feel free to message me with any moving related questions, even if you're not using our service.
I moved from Loretto TN to Greensboro NC (about 550 miles) last October. I got a quote from Two Men & a Truck to load at origin, drive the truck, and unload at destination: over $5500-5800 depending on the insurance coverage. Already having a substantially cheaper Uhaul estimate in hand to drive the stuff myself, I said "screw that" to the full service moving option. What I actually ended up paying:
20ft Uhaul truck + trailer for my car + insurance: $930
Gas to drive it myself: $180-200
Paying a moving company to send 2 guys out to load the truck at origin: about $120 (2 hours of labor)
Paying a moving company to send 2 guys out to unload the truck at destination: about $200 (3 hours of labor due to being a 3rd floor apartment)
So, just shy of $1500 total. Saved over $4k and the main thing I had to do was drive the truck myself. Keep in mind, we didn't have a whole lot of stuff and most of our furniture is very simple/easily maneuvered . We've even gotten rid of a lot more things since then.
Is it standard to pay per pound? Because I feel like my fitness equipment is going to cost a fortune to move... but I just bought it two years ago and there’s no way I’m leaving $7,000 in equipment either lol.
