CA...to Portland ME, services that transport pets....cannot even imagine the cost. Ideally as other have said is to drive across country.....another stressor. Either way you do it....it will be difficult.
I work for an airline. Four categories of animals:
1) Service Animal - Requires no paperwork, just a reasonable assurance to the airline representative that they provide a service that assists you with a disability. Animal cannot occupy a passenger seat and must remain on the floor.
2) Emotional Support Animal - Requires a letter from a physician or psychologist. Animal cannot occupy a passenger seat and must remain on the floor.
3) Pet-in-cabin - At my airline only a cat or dog. Has to fit in a soft-sided carrier and the carrier must fit under the seat in front of you. Animal must remain in the carrier for the entire flight. At my airline is a $100 fee each way for a pet-in-cabin, no health certificate required for domestic flights.
4) Pet in Cargo - Lots of rules on this one and can be expensive.
