My first eleven years in the government I moved something like 13 times. Single guy, rare training and experience - it was always 'Send Schmedley - he can go do it.'

The last twenty years in government I only moved twice. Then I retired - a final move.

Ditto. I love trying new places. Life's too short to live in one place your entire life. I also love proving the naysayers wrong when I continually move on low budgets. Move #10? Oh, I've lost track, whatever, move number XX is in the works.

I agree that I do not care what other people think with regard to how often I move, why I move and where I move to. It's MY life, period.

With that said, I am making an effort to stay put in my current place for at least another 3 years or so, in order to build job stability on my resume. My career has been very unstable and I want to reduce that image of instability so that I can appear more marketable. I want to prove to my current employer and future employers that I am not a serial job hopper. So i am committing to at least 4 years here. By then, I will be 36 years old and if I feel ready to leave this employer (and perhaps leave the Hartford, CT area), then I will look for a new job elsewhere. If things are going well and I am happy to stay here even longer, then I will stay here even longer. It is extremely unlikely that I will settle down and buy a home around here by the age of 36 (cost of living is too high), however.

I have to say though, It feels better to be a native than a transplant, from my experience. But at the same time, I do enjoy experiencing new places to live.
