I like searching for local neighborhood blogs myself. I find that newspapers skew towards the negative and don't really talk much about the culture of an area. Whereas the Blogs feel more dynamic
I work for a newspaper, so maybe I'm a little biased, but I can't imagine moving to a new area without checking the local paper. It gives you a great feel about the cost of living, what is available for the family to do, what kind of stores they have, local government issues, school events, etc. There are also jobs, rentals, homes for sale that you won't find online.
