I plan on moving to another state so instead of carrying my things, I plan to ship it to me to the new state but I don't have an address yet. Do I have it shipped to a neutral location like a shipping container company so I could just go there and pick it up or what?

I thought those shipping containers do what I described? Let's say I ship my stuff from NYC to LA, but without an LA address, it gets shipped to the shipping container company's facility til I get there to pick it up.
Yes, Many/Most of the "Pod" type shippers will Hold (You Pay Monthly fee for Pod Storage in their lot, or building). When you are ready for delivery, They schedule it to be delivered.
Note: You will not have easy access to the Pod while in Storage, Also Many have have regional storage location (In low cost area). So a pod going to LA might be stored some somewhere in Nevada. (I'm assuming LA is Los Angeles , Not Louisiana).
Why not put your shipping container in storage at your current location, then send for it once you have a new address picked out? That way you know where it is being stored (you can check it out) and it has less chance of mysteriously disappearing in LA while you are looking for a new home. You don't need to store it in NYC exactly but you can pick a town nearby so you can visit it before you leave on your long trip.
If it's going via USPS, then you can send it to yourself "General Delivery" to a post office where you're going to be. I don't know how long they'd hold it for you, though.
So I can actually send it to the post office without having a P.O. Box? Let's say I live in NYC and want to drive to Los Angeles for relocation but want my personal belongings shipped to me to L.A. but I don't have an address yet. Do I just send the package to a local post office and then pick it up there showing proof of I.D.?
I want to travel light that's why. Maybe I should inquire at the local post office? I would definitely insure so in case it all gets lost and damaged.

For most Post Office zip codes, you do it that way. However, for large metro areas like NYC, LA, Chicago, Atlanta, etc, you need to contact the destination post office to get the proper zip code and location of General Delivery as some local zip code post offices do not handle General Delivery.

If it is just boxes and stuff, see if there is a UPS store near where you are going and open up a box over the phone. Note that it may require filling out, signing, and emailing some forms.
Once complete, you'll pay over the phone and they can give you your address, or addresses depending on how the store receives USPS or UPS/Fedex.
I've used that method successfully on three moves since 2012. I would use it on my upcoming move, but there is no UPS store near where I am going to.
If it is household goods, and you are moving it via a commercial carrier, they will likely have a storage facility nearby. Same with Pods, PackRat, ABF, etc.
