My brother has a mobile "body shop" where he goes to car dealerships and does their overflow jobs for them in the Charlotte area. His business has flourished like crazy and has been able to expand and become wealthy! Charlotte only gets about 6" of snow per Winter. Housing prices and cost of living in general is much lower than SoCal. Buying power (wages vs. cost of living) is much, much lower in Charlotte. It can get humid in the Summers, but "how humid" is very relative. To me, it's no big deal. The coastal areas is much more humid. But some people have a greater sensitivity to humidity. We homeschooled our kids through middle school and NC is VERY homeschool friendly. It was a great experience. For a smaller metro, yet big enough for your husband to have a good number of dealerships to keep him busy, Greenville, SC or Chattanooga, TN would be good choices too. About the same snowfall as Charlotte and they're great areas in which to live. As far as out West, I thought of St. George, UT. The metro isn't big, though. Maybe Albuquerque. Anyway, good luck in your search!

Take a look at Sedona Arizona. Not Phoenix hot, but not Flagstaff winters. Beautiful scenery, nice town. Nearby Prescott has a lot of history. The Grand Canyon is not too far away. Trips to Mexico are easy to do.
