Hi & thanks in advance. We are moving with a budget 24' truck, Ca.-Mo. Stuff isnt going to fit..My question: Is it legal & possible to pull a trailer with this type of truck? Budget doesnt rent them, so we'd have to rent one from U-haul ( 6' x 12' )...Thats why we dont want to ask Budget incase they'd frown upon it. But 1st & foremost, we want to be safe & legal. Our only other option is the cubes...

Honestly i have never seen anyone doing that before and there should be a good reason for it. Trucking companies safety standard or whatever the reason is ???
And you shouldn't be the first to do it i suggest.... Try to rearrange your stuff and i am sure you will have some extra room. Or rent a auto carrier if you want to haul your car/truck with you and load your extra stuff in your car/truck.
Why don't you call U Haul the 1.800 number to ask if it road legal/safety.
I like Penske trucks out of the 3.... Basicly they re newer = less gas/diesel, cheaper rate VS the other 2.
Good luck.

Discovery, 1st thank you...no we dont want to be the 1st, and no way would we risk safety. But we dont want to ask budget because I'm sure they wouldnt want the "u-haul" name behind their truck, so dont feel they'd give us a honest answer...maybe u-haul wont either for the same reason. grrr
The car being hauled wont help, we'll need more room than that I think. I tell ya, this moving is for the birds! Its so hard to figure out how much room you'll need. This also is a estate issue, so we have tons more stuff & still dont know exactly what will be going. I wanted Penske sooooo bad, cause of all the wonderful reviews here, but the weight they carry was way lower than Budget, and price was hundreds less with B.

Budget site says the 24' truck has a hitch, and I have towed a U-Haul 6x12c behind a U-Haul that was 24' or 26'. Those U-Haul 6x12s are really nice to pull. They have the dual axle and the extra length. They are very agile, follow the tow vehicle well, and I've never managed to make one sway. If I want to rent an enclosed trailer for a small job, that's the one I get, even if I don't need a trailer that big. There is about a $200-$250 drop-off charge for renting a trailer one way, though.

Watch the GVW fully loaded, though. Don't exceed the truck's towing / hauling capacity. And some states have issues with GVW vehicle weight vs. needing a CDL license, and some want you stopping at weight stations.

U-Haul 24' truck has 7500 # towing capacity. http://www.uhaul.com/Reservations/Eq....aspx?model=GH

Just ask Budget what their capacity is, since they say Hitch on their site but don't give you the towing capacity.

If you haven't moved yet, I hope all goes well. If I'm too late, well, the info is here for reference for the next person.

Does Budget rent trailers? I think the previous posts are right, you can pull a trailer, just make sure it hooks up correctly, the brake/tail/signal lights work, safety chains, etc.

When I moved I pulled a car on a dolly, put a lot of stuff in the car.

If all else fails maybe Pods?

breeinmo,

where you able to get a trailer from uhal and pull it behind the budget rental truck? Also, do you remember if the hitch ball was 2" or 2 5/16" and was it welded on like a penske truck ball is. Thanks

Looking for an enclosed 5x10 or larger cargo trailer to pull behind my Tundra. Must have an opening of 63 inches.
