We moved in a month ago, but the post office returns all our mail to sender.
It's a rural area, and there was no mailbox, so we put one down by all the other boxes for our street. Left a note on the box for the carrier (he took it). We went to the local p.o. and talked to the counter clerk, who gave us a form to fill out and leave in our mailbox. We did, carrier took it.
We've talked to the carrier when he delivers packages to our house, but apparently letters and bills are sorted a different way and our address isn't in that system.
Any suggestions? We're going to the post office again tomorrow to see if they can at least hold our mail for pickup.
Newly built home? Has the home been registered with the post office? My dad ran into a similar problem decades ago when the homes in his area became a part of the city and they had to switch to street adresses from whatever they were using before. Had to fill out a bunch of paperwork dealing with where the house was physically located.

You should also sign up for USPS's Informed Delivery service. You get an e-mail everyday showing what , if any, mail is to be delivered. Also shows packages in transit & delivered.
House is over 30 years old, but apparently the last person who lived here either never had mail delivery or the house was vacant for a long time.
Informed delivery doesn't work because they don't recognize the address (I did try that).
Postmaster says it can take weeks for the info to get updated, but won't say how many weeks, and says there's nothing else she can do. She can't explain why packages get through but mail doesn't.
Meanwhile, they've returned bills and checks and letters to sender stamped "undeliverable." We can't even get cable or order on ebay because the address isn't in the p.o. master list.

Ah, yes, the beauty of living in a small town.
When I moved back to a small town where my ex lived, and my daughter had moved back to - in other words, I had lived there in the past, chose to move away, but had chosen to move back- your postmaster/mistress is enjoying his/her power.
In the meantime, maybe you could just pay for a PO box?
But, I think what you're experiencing is the joy of living in a small town, where a really small fish can make life really miserable for people in their small pond. I will never deal with that again, but good luck to you.
Instead of blaming it on small towns and their post offices, don't forget the local post office may not be the one causing the problems. The USPS went to regional post offices sending out the mail a few years ago. For example, I live in western Kentucky, about 25 miles from the Mississippi River. Instead of the mail being routed through the old regional post office in Paducah, about 20 miles away, all the mail for this area of Kentucky, is routed from the new regional post office in Evansville, Indiana, about 140 miles up I-69. I imagine even paper work from local POs have trouble getting to where they're supposed to go.
I'd get as many bills as possible come in email. Good luck!
The mail is sorted by machine and is delivered to the small town in trays. It is the machine that doesn't know your address. Your carrier never sees it. Packages will be sent to your local post office and they will be sorted out to the appropriate carrier.

Something's missing here, alright. What a mess!
You could use a private mail forwarding service until you get US mail sorted out. Google "mail forwarding usa".
Call your city counsellor about the mail problem. If you can't get phone contact, write a letter and send via registered mail. CC: your state gov. CC: postmaster . Follow up on your letter.
I'd be going nuts without TV or computer. If you want TV get an HD TV antenna. No need for cable. You didn't mention if you have use of your computer or cell. Cast your smart phone screen to your TV and surf for channels and movies with a phone app.
