Well if they steal that one rusty hammer I have it might not be a bad thing! I can see where a bunch of tools would be lucrative for someone to take off a person's hands if they could get away with it.

I've been lucky with the movers I've hired over the years. Nothing stolen, not even anything broken. I'm only one person, so it would be impossible to watch each one of them during a move. I guess you can find dishonest people anywhere, but do as much research as you can and find reputable companies. It's not worth saving some money if you end up with some fly-by-night operation that will steal or not take care of your stuff.

We bought the mattress bags from a U-Haul several moves ago and ended up using them several times before finally throwing them away! It really helps to keep the dirt off of your mattresses and box springs.

We used ABF 3 times and always loaded (and unloaded) our own things, with help from friends. My husband is very good at figuring out the best way to load the ABF trailer, and I know he has appreciated when I try to use similar-sized boxes for packing.

He loves that packing/cling wrap stuff! We bought some used furniture pads on Craigslist - great idea since those have been used so many times too. Definitely will want some rope to help keeps items from shifting. And yes, a good quality padlock for the wall barrier.

I’ve yet to have anything stolen, but I’ve had the opposite. One of them left a very nice, barely used Nike hoodie and I called the truck just after they left, didn’t pick up. I called HQ the next day and nobody would say it was theirs. It sure wasn’t mine haha but since they wouldn’t take it back I just kept it. Kinda funny.

I’ve had a good number of things broken though including furniture, but they repaired or replaced it.

Thanks for all the input..... this will be our last move and only long distance move... :-). I'm not doing this again ...lol. My adult children will have to box me up and ship me first class, if it happens again.

Ha, same here! We are moving to our forever state, and beyond that our moves would be in the same city. Unless, extreme example here, the US turns into a socialist country or raises taxes ludicrously high, then I’d leave for the Cayman Islands but for now I trust my fellow Americans to understand history well enough to forego idiocy
