Back in the fall of 2015 I moved from South Florida to Central Pennsylvania with a broken ankle. Had to fly family members down to FL but, even with a cast and crutches I was able to pack myself with minimal help from friends. One of my brothers and my nephew loaded up my car and a rental and drove me to PA. Once I had a plan in place it wasn’t bad at all.
I had to move (3BR house) a few weeks after back surgery when I couldn't bend or lift anything. I paid a housekeeper to help me pack up my clothes and personal things. I had the movers pack everything else...furnishings, kitchen stuff, books, etc. I kept an eagle eye on them while they packed up electronics.
A family member helped transport me and my parrots.
The problems happened on the other end. Family members proved to be completely useless, unpacking and cramming things into closets willy-nilly, where I couldn't access them. Things got lost or broken. It took me several years to finally locate everything and put things where they were useful.
My advice is to hire help to do what you want them to do and don't rely on family who think they know what you should want. Also, get checked out by your doctor before you move, and don't wait until you can find a new doctor in your new location because it could take months to get an appt. And don't forget your medical records.
Thanks everyone, gave you all reps. Quite some stories here! I will definitely take my time, go see a doctor soon, and hire professionsals for the biggest things. I will pack what I can and at least we can take our time. But at least I don't feel so hopeless/stressed now. Wow that story about moving while in a coma was something else!
I was 7 months pregnant when we moved. We also had time but the idea of having to get everything packed up to go was stressful.
We also had another move where DH's new employer paid for a full-move. Movers came in two days before and literally packed up everything. I made sure to pack our most important items (paperwork, jewelry, etc) but they did the rest and it was amazing.
What helped the most when we moved ourselves was to go to Home Depot or Lowes and get the small size of moving boxes. People often make the mistake of using larger boxes but those become too heavy once loaded. The small boxes made packing things not overwhelming.
Just an update: Turns out I have a rather large blood clot, and am in the hospital. On an IV drip of Heparin right now, and don't know if they will have to perform any procedures. Just another stress, but I take heart from your stories here.

I had Achilles tendon surgery (about 8 months recovery time) about two months before we moved into our current home. I was still on crutches in fact when we put a contract on the home so just a few weeks later, I still had a lot of swelling and pain and was still in PT for that matter.
Now I'm sitting here with a brace on my RIGHT WRIST and I don't even know how I hurt it but I sure have - and we close on our new house tomorrow morning.
YIKES! But my last experience shows me that everything is going to work out fine.
Just do what you can and rest when you need to.
Oh and the people we are buying the house from - well, she's pregnant and her due date is in two weeks! So her husband has been doing nearly everything. I feel as sorry for them as I do for myself, maybe even moreso! They also have two very young boys - as in TODDLERS. OMG.

Well, the great news is that once they diagnose this, the cure is very, very effective. I'm so glad you went on to the doctor.

Thanks, Kathryn. They put me on a few days of IV Heparin, today they took it off and started me on Eliquis. They decided not to do the lysis procedure. My leg is still very swollen and painful, but they say with time it should heal. But it's kind of a wait and see. Sorry about your wrist. This **** sucks, doesn't it??

Absolutely.
My dad was on Eliquis and he had basically zero side effects - from what I hear it is a very effective and safe and easy to use drug. He also had a clot in his lower leg. It was fine in about two weeks. Hopefully yours will resolve quickly too.
I HATE GETTING OLDER. It's not the life experiences that I hate - it's that our bodies seem to want to betray us, break down, etc!
