In my search online for moving tips I found these ideas:
Amtrak will ship boxes to/from 100+ stations (things in boxes-not just books). Max size is 3'x3'x3', max weight per box is 50 pounds and max total boxes/weight is 500 pounds per day. You are in charge of getting it to Amtrak and picking it up. Sounds like a good idea for moving books from one city to another. They also take pallets in larger sizes and up to 500 pounds per pallet but that is above my ability. You have to call them and get shipping estimate, it's not published but online people say about $1 per pound. 800-377-6914
USPS will ship books by Media Mail. There is a 70 pound max per box, I'm not sure of box maximum size but 70 pounds of books will limit box size anyway. I did a rough figure of Florida zip to NC zip of 50 pounds of books and it's 56 cents per pound. Maybe even cheaper across country and def. the way to send books to AK or HI at lowest cost.
I may not use this alternative for the 10 boxes of books in my whole house move but people who have many, many books Media Mail could save money.
