Break down all of your costs, line by line, then add more due to unforseen incidents.

Would $4,000 be enough or should we allocate more towards moving cost?

Thanks
NO. I'll cost you more than 4k. you have to schedule few free estimates to get an idea.
consider:
wrapping, packing...if you have 2 story home or uphill/downhill will cost you more(same for destination), fragile boxes, big items, insurance ,shipping cars...all these costs extra.

try to find free boxes on FB or local forums.
don't forget to take photos of your most expensive items.

We just moved 1300 miles 3 weeks ago. In total, all moving costs were roughly $12,000.

That includes the mover, who also towed one of our vehicles. We did all packing ourselves. Probably spent $100 in boxes and packing materials. Note: always buy 3 times the tape you think you need.
Also includes renting a van to drive us and 3 cats the distance (roughly $1,000).
Includes my husband flying back, one-way, so he could drive the second car back a week later.
We have a 3 bedroom house.

This is just the physical move itself. Doesn't include gas, food, immediate expenses since we were here about 36 hours before the mover, and many, many incidentals for setting up a new place.

I moved 1200 miles and hired a company to do it. Total costs around $10,000.00, not including damage to my stuff plus other stuff they managed to lose. Due to an “agreement” I signed with them in order to get money back, I cannot mention the name of the moving company. Just know that if you’re considering a company located in Columbus Ohio think long and hard before you do. I learned the hard way that great ratings on Angie’s list are sometimes the result of very dissatisfied customers who are forbidden from rating them due to these “agreements”, meaning they never have any negative reviews.

Paying a higher cost does not always attest to the reliability and professionalism of the moving company, as you have noted!

For us the moving company was $11,000 roughly, and there were lots of other costs like several thousand for boxes and packing supplies and crating and whatnot. Then a hotel room twice, driving each car 900 miles and stopping half way. So maybe almost $15,000? A drop in the bucket compared to all of the new house expenses, though.

We moved from our 3 bedroom 1 bath house 1,100 miles, two states away and it cost us $2,300 - in 1993. I would expect it to be 3-4 times more now. No one can guess, however, as it's normally priced by weight. In order to save, get rid of heavy items like books, and get a hard estimate based on the person coming to see your stuff. Estimates over the phone are not binding, they can double it or more when they actually weight the load.

For some $40,000 wouldn't be enough while others could make it work on $400.
There's no ****ing way in hell you're moving on $400 out of state unless someone else is footing the majority of the bill. You can't move in town on that.

I'd say $6000 or more. Moving is horrifically expensive.

It depends on how much stuff you have. I don't know anything about you, but I am a 21 year old guy, senior in college and my dream would be for me to move from NJ to the West, so I would assume that is 2,000 miles away. My dream is to drive across the country when I do move. I have enough stuff that I could squeeze in my car when I move. My clothing would take up most of the load, but I would leaving behind my furnitures since I would be moving out of my parents' house.

My brother went to college out of state and had to live apartments. When my brother was moving back home after college, my dad squeezed everything he had in his minivan, but it may block your rear view. My brother brought back home his mattress, a desk, a chair, clothing, personal care, etc. We ended up having to leave a chair behind, because it could not fit in the car.

I would pretty much only have to worry about putting gas in the car as a cost.
