I have done this before for short moves. What do you do on a long move with contents stored in a safe for long distance? Do you transport the contents separately, or leave them in there? Thanks!
I would take the contents with me and leave the safe empty. Things like important papers (birth certificates, passports), precious jewelry, and weapons would go with me in the car, probably in a fire proof briefcase.
We had a locked fireproof file cabinet moved with contents. But we kept our personal papers with us on our long drive to our new location. You need to keep careful, personal control over your birth certificates, passports, financial records, new address papers, and any other papers you do not want lost or stolen. This might mean carrying them in with you overnight in a motel or hotel.
Do not let those papers out of your control during any phase of your move. Remember that you will need them at your new location.

best advice I obtained was : A- Leave Those documents with a lawyers office. They can fedex them to you when you get to your final destination.
Better to have them at a secured location then in your possession. The Law office has a better secured way to fire proof and water proof them then you do while traveling to your destination.
The law office though would not retain guns, ammo or things of that nature. Particularly if you were skedaddling out of town after Uncle Fester took some extra lead and left you with his fortune.

I'm moving a safe within the next year, and this is exactly the way I'm doing it.

That's exactly how we did it too. We moved the safe empty and just put the stuff in our vehicle and put it back in when the professional safe movers moved the safe to the new house.
It all depends on how many safes, what size and what contents.
If you just have one single and can transport contents with you considering US state and/or international requirements - go for it. Otherwise use a specialized shipper.
