My fiance was a supervisor at a moving company at one point in his life. Talk about some hard work and crazy stories. LOL!
Anyway, he says that tips were not expected but always appreciated and that his team was tipped on nearly every long distance move they did, especially if packing up belongings was also involved. They got anywhere from $25 - $400+, depending on the clients. He was in the Bay area (Ca) and moved a few famous folks.
They usually got fed, were provided drinks, and also often got offered furniture, knick knacks, collectibles, etc. Stuff people no longer needed or wanted.
We had movers move us 1200 miles and we tipped them zero dollars. They broke or lost several of our items, including 18 years worth of Christmas decorations that included my child’s homemade ornaments. Oh, and they were several days late with delivery.
The people delivering your belongings didn't improperly pack, break, or lose them. The moving company, warehouse employees, and packers were at fault here. You shot the messenger.

You know this how?
In my case, during two of my many moves, the movers packed, loaded, and delivered; therefore, if something broke or was lost it would have been their fault. But I would not have ever shot the messenger; it's illegal!
