2 of us moving from Fl to CO. We each have a car so we will drive those.
Currently live in a 1 bedroom 900 Square foot apt. Moving to a 2200 square foot home with 3 bedrooms that I bought.

So I am trying to figure out if selling as much as I can and leaving the rest that wont fit in the car would even make sense. With our clothes along we'd fill up one car easily I think.

Got a quote for almost $4,000 from a moving company. Im just looking for opinions from people in my position - does it make sense to pay this much to move? Im not sure if I can get rid of my beds, sofa, TV..etc. I only have 6 weeks. Plus we'd still have a full kitchen and other things to box up and move.

I know I could ship via Amtrak so I'm debating my options there as well. Any advice appreciated.

Getting rid of stuff is fast if you have a town dump. Replacing all those things at the other end costs both money and time.

Have you considered shipping your "stuff" by one of the container outfits, like
U-pack https://www.upack.com/how-upack-work...ving-container
PODS https://www.pods.com/
u-Box https://www.uhaul.com/UBox/

They give free quotes on-line

What about renting a U-Haul truck with one of their car trailers? You drive to CO in your car and simply load the other car onto the trailer while your partner drives the U-Haul.

We moved my MIL this way and she was coming from a 2 bedroom apartment. Plenty of room in a 17' truck, plus we were able to fill her car up with belongings, too.

Unfortunately I am not allowed to use a POD in my current Condo building.

Yep, looked it up and it's still going to run me over 2k - and be a lot more stressful. I am willing to spend a little more I think - but thank you!

Your name equates to your post. I am going to leverage a few companies against each other and try and get my cost down a little. I do think it will cost me more to buy all new stuff in such a large house.

In that case, what some people do, when it is still the less expensive total cost, they rent a local Uhaul, and take their stuff to the container outfit's local terminal/location and fill it there.

Same on the other end if necessary.

Good luck whatever you do.........

That quote isn’t bad. We paid about twice that much to move from an 800 sq ft apartment in SF to an 1150 sq ft apartment in Wisconsin in April. We kept a lot of stuff and we got rid of a lot of stuff. The big things (bed, sofa, TV) we kept because we had bought them all fairly recently. It was well worth not having to buy it again at the other end in a pandemic. The movers were great.

Every way of moving costs money, time, and effort; it’s all about which of each you can afford, and when.

Almost 20 years ago, when I moved from the Midwest to California, I actually mailed clothes, books, and other small stuff — that was cost-effective and easy enough.

Ship your wardrobe. That should give you lots of room/capacity for other household things.
I see you're moving to a colder/mountainous area, from a flat warm/hot area. Are your cars suitable for snow/ice? If not, then get ride of 1 at least now, before you move. (Convertible Corvettes make dandy cars when it's warm. Not so much in ice.)
Altitude is a whole 'nuther ball of wax...

This is what I did and it saved a lot of money. I used U pack though, which was even cheaper.

You can also ship items with Greyhound. It is a good deal if you have 4-5 items such as moving boxes, but anything more than that I'd rent a U-Haul.
