I currently live in Kansas. Since my job has now become permanently work from home I'm going to move to Florida when the lease on my home expires in September.

I'm also going to legally change my last name to separate myself from an awful father (but that's a topic for another time and place). Should I try to take care of the name change now? Or should I wait until after I've established residency in Florida before doing so?

I would LOVE to make the name change now but can wait if need be.

How long does it take in Kansas where you reside now for a name change to become effective? That might sway my thinking. If it wasn't confirmed to take effect until right before I moved, I would probably wait until afterward. Sort of the ultimate clean break. If I did it too close to the move itself it could create more confusion. Utilities and financial institutions will want payment, income, financing, and/or rental histories. If you throw sand into the works right when you need them things can be delayed or rejected.

Do it after you relocate and get settled. Otherwise, you may have trouble verifying your identity for credit checks.

^Yes. I moved to another state recently. I plan to return to my maiden name and now that I'm established and have printouts from the Social Security Administration, IRS, Medicare, etc. plus a copy of my certified birth certificate, it will be done much more easily. Even if you have all the proof, it could delay things if you do it before moving.
