2 2-2 men and a Truck wilL assist for a fee. They will also haul away unwanted furniture you' want to leave behind. I will call them when I am ready to load the ReloCube I have on Reservation.

I think my cross-country movers hired that same crew. I slept the first night with a gun on the night stand. They were two hours late and the first thing they wanted to do was to take a break. It went downhill from there.

Does anyone have experience and recommendations as to how we find good, reliable helpers to load the truck and then unload at our new location?

We have just a few pieces of large, heavy furniture -- and a refrigerator -- that we cannot possibly load & unload ourselves. We *could* load and unload our stuff ourselves in some of the low-slung containers (like PODS, Relocubes, etc.) if not for those heavy items. But those containers are much more expensive than the trailer option, mostly because of the long distance.

Advice...?
I know this is an old question, but for other who may be wondering the same I've moved to several states and have contracted movers in each state using craigslist. I've also simply posted in the city/state forum here and asked the community for recommendations for movers, then looked at yelp and google reviews to confirm. It's not difficult unless you're moving to a particularly rural area where businesses and labor are scarce.

I used Nextdoor and found a couple of college guys to unload for me. Worked out great!

We moved from CA to TX using PODS. We had some stuff loaded by paid workers, and some of it by family and friends, but had paid unloaders in TX. It's the only way to go.

I agree with the assessment of using a rental truck that you drive and hiring load/unload help at origin and destination us the most budget friendly and least stressful option after a few different moves, I have learned though after my last move to avoid U-Haul if possible. Their "customer service" is atrocious and reservations meaningless given they shrug their shoulders and say we're out of those. On my last move that would have been any moving implement with wheels, which is impossible with stairs and long distances to the truck. They finally caved on a 20% discount because we had to rent a handtruck and four wheel flat roller from a local tool rental place on the fly. Next time Penske, Ryder or Budget!

Call the local high school and ask the football coach. Or a large church with a youth group.

I usually use Penske for the truck. They partner with http://simplemovinglabor.com/
Used them twice and had great workers both times.
Once for unloading a packed 26 foot truck where we had to go up two very long flights of concrete stairs with everything. They got it all up there in 3 hours.

Recently used them for both ends of a local move. They took great care on loading to ensure nothing was damaged in transit.

If you tell them the truck is penske they give you a discount.. They don't check.

Another tip: On long distance moves i would go to the penske site to get a quote. I would provide my info but not reserve the truck. Someone from Penske contact me within days to sweeten the deal and they gave a voucher that covered half the moving help cost. He also greatly discounted the trailer i towed with my car on it.
