BE CAREFUL! Many people who contracted to have their things moved wound up with their belongings disappearing at unknown locations, later to be sold in auctions to strangers!
MY 104 year old mother was without her belongings for several months
before they were finally located & somehow sent to her!
We hired movers at one end to pack our stuff and load the cubes. Then hired movers at the other end to unload the cubes and move the stuff into our place. We loaded and unloaded the cubes at the Upack terminals as it’s cheaper than having them delivered.
Three cubes half way cross country plus two movers recently cost us $6,200. That includes $400 for a guaranteed delivery date. Both times they met the delivery date.
You need two padlocks per cube and you get a tracking number so you know where your cubes are. Once they arrive you have three business days to get your stuff or they start charging you storage fees. I think it’s $50 per day.
Upack also offers a trailer that’s cheaper. Just an anecdotal story, but one of the movers said they’ve unpacked the trailers before and stuff was damaged every time because of the way they jack up the trucks. Whether that’s true, I don’t know.
I'd recommend three movers for long distance/cross country. I've moved with them twice over the past six years and they've been great. They work everywhere in the U.S. and were on the affordable side when I've used them (at least compared to others anyway).
Be sure the company is packing/moving JUST YOUR ITEMS into the truck to deliver and not 2 or 3 OTHER homes (the drivers are contracted out and put another load onto the truck?) Get in writing: JUST YOUR FURNISHINGS/ITEMS. No other homes to be shared on that truck. For you may not ever see all of your items. Might be unloaded at the house previous to yours.
Years ago, movers delivered someone else's furniture to our house. I stopped them when I realized that these were not our things.
The driver asked if we wanted them anyway.
So strange.
