For those who have used U-Haul trucks with the "Mom's Attic" shelf above the cab... what did you use to secure the boxes so that they don't fly out when the truck goes uphill? I have a steep hill at the very end of my route in two weeks. Is rope sufficient? Or should I invest in something more significant like ratchet straps or something similar?

U-Haul sells the ratchet straps to secure that area.

If you ain't piling it high enough in the rest of the truck space to secure that area, you probably could have used a smaller truck!

Yep. If you don't have enough stuff to pile as high as the attic why use it? I've usually loaded the over-cab area first (usually lighter weight oddly shaped things that don't box well), then loaded taller items such as upended bedframes, mattresses, or an entertainment center to prevent the stuff from shifting backward. I didn't put very heavy things in the attic so rope was more than enough to secure it. You could combine rope with flattened boxes/cardboard to form more of a solid barrier. Larger packing boxes could also be stacked and lashed into place behind the attic making use of the truck's sidewalls.

They didn't just throw shade, they spoke from experience. We have used U-Haul a few times, and you'll see. In the future, being polite to those that respond will get you better results.

I do suggest you read all the information that U-Haul has to offer about packing the truck, especially regarding the items that go into the attic.
