We always used the straps cradling the washer with your forarms. You still need 2 strong people though, the stronger person at the top. The 2nd person lifting it down a step at a time.

Many moving companies will do small jobs in their down time. We've had a local companies move larger pieces of furniture around our homes several times. They typically can't come at a moments notice, but will work it in when they have a free day. Cost is well worth it for a job like this (like a few hundred in our case).

I just did this exact same thing yesterday. Me and my son used a two wheel dolly. I'm 60 and he is 26. I pulled from the top and he pushed from the bottom. It actually was pretty easy to move the washer and the dryer.

Since you want to do down and not up, just rent an appliance hand truck from Uhaul. They have these conveyer belt type rollers on the back so gently lowering it down step by step is not that hard with only one person and rather easy with two.

Hard part is make sure you have room to make the turn on the stairs if one exists. It it's a straight shot than a simple 2 wheel dolly is easy. A flat furniture comes in handy to get the washer in and out of tight spaces.

It's basically a two-man job, and I always want the stronger man at the bottom. A washing machine typically weighs about 200 pounds, maybe a bit more, so it's not that bad.

An appliance dolly, two wheels with a strap, is probably the best way to go, although I've probably moved them without a dolly.
