If this thing is really valuable it can definitely be worthwhile to hire professionals. An older Steinway can cost as much as a house!
If the piano's value is mostly sentimental it may be better to find someone that would appreciate locally.
Somewhere in between regular movers will be fine. You need to get a piano tuner to check it BEFORE and after so that if there are any damage claims you have documentation. Even cheap pianos can cost A LOT to repair...
As a professional musician and piano tuner myself, I say this... you can move the darn thing in a pickup truck if it'll fit. That's how I got my Yamaha upright piano from my in-laws' house to my house. Just make sure that the driver of the truck drives carefully.
Figure that you will have to tune it after the move... and I agree that you should get its condition and function documented before the move if it is an especially expensive or collectible piano. If it's a $500 junker that you're getting for nothing, then just take your chances.
