Is there a way to move other than a diesel over-the-road truck?

Is there a way to get a van loaded, then put it on a RR flatcar and take it across the country? Seems this would save huge amounts of fuel.

Or...truck it to a port, put it on a cargo ship, through the Panama Canal, and back up to say, Portland ME.

Does anyone do this? It would seem a logical way to save a lot of shipping cost.

Railroad cargo containers are used by large commercial and industrial companies that can pay large transportation bills; they are not available to individuals because individuals are not interested in paying tens of thousands of dollars for their use.

Shipping household items down the Pacific Ocean, through the Panama Canal, and up the Atlantic Ocean would cost even more, most likely close to six figures.

So the reason those methods of transport aren't used by individuals is because they are prohibitively expensive for an individual container owned by an individual citizen or family.

Of course, one could rent a transport plane, such as the C130 Hercules, or the C-17. But well, there we go again at a cost of many hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Seems that U-Haul and Penske and PODS make a lot of sense, doesn't it?

Thank you for the response, Quatt Lady.

What I'm wondering if there is a moving company that does this. It only makes sense.

No it doesn't because of the costs involved. The only time I hear about people using thshipping container method is if they are military and either coming from or going to a long term station outside the US. Then they use the military equipment to ship the material and not commercial freighters.

The cost to ship a semi trailer across the country by rail has got to be significantly lower than by highway.

The cost to ship by cargo vessel should be lower than by highway.

It is the contracting and coordinating that doesn't seem to be happening. Maybe a professional mover would chime in with an opinion.
