I am moving next across the country and won't need my appliances. I want to donate washer/dryer,refrig, microwave to a charity here in MA preferably an animal protection charity but an abused women's charity will do. I need them to come pick up the stuff and I want a tax deduction. Anyone have any ideas on how I can find one or know of one?
Oh, please don't burden a charity with items it doesn't use or need. The charity will realize no benefit at all.
If an animal shelter really does need the washer or the microwave -- and agrees to accept it and has the resources to pick it up -- fine. But otherwise, donating your junk creates a burden on the charity, which does not have the resources to deal with those types of donations.
If you really want to help a charity, sell your appliances and give the charity the cash.
The Salvation Army can usually pick up items like that. They would then sell them in one of their Thrift Shops or give them to needy families that need them.
Good Will Thift Stores would be another option. Try to figure out about how much you think they are worth. Either the SA or GW will give you a receipt that you can use towards your donation limit on your income taxes.
You could ask your question on the Mass. forum - someone might have an answer. Depending on what city/town you're in, there might be some sort of shelter that could use your appliances for themselves or could give them to a family who's leaving the shelter to go out on their own.
If you're a member of or affiliated with a church, you could ask the priest/pastor/minister if he/she knows a family in need.
Habitat for Humanity used to accept donations of appliances. Also you might look into a community outreach which helps people settle into new homes.
