Has anyone bought mattress covers before? Do they actually keep out moving van bugs?

Also, any advice on the few days before moving yourself? Like, how soon to do certain things? Or where to stack the boxes in your house before you move? Or how to stay organized with all of the last minute things you have to remember?

THanks.

No, they don't actually keep out moving van bugs, because they are just a plastic slip cover, they don't seal. They are meant to keep the mattress free from dirt and dust, because the bottom of the moving van will be dirty (from hauler's shoes, debris rolled in on carts, boxes that were set on the floor, etc). I've moved almost two dozen times though, and never once picked up bugs from the movers. I don't think it should really be that much of a concern.

I just heard that there are bed bugs and such in moving vans. Any other advice since you have moved a lot?

If there are bed bugs in the van, they will get into everything,--boxes, clothes, furniture--a mattress cover won't stop them.

Label every box on two sides. Number them as well and keep a list of what is in every box. Keep the list somewhere portable--a laptop, a handheld device, etc. Be detailed in the list: "paperback fiction books" "cooking utensils, pot holders, and spices" "office supplies and computer software install disks". Don't use 'etc' 'miscellaneous' or 'stuff' in your list--or guaranteed, you'll have a need to find something during the move, and you'll have to open a half dozen boxes to find it. This list also helps put a valuation on any damaged or missing items if something should happen during the move.

Check with your insurance company about coverage. Movers will often try to sell you coverage. Depending on your homeowner's/insurance policy, you may not need to purchase additional coverage, or you may decide to buy a separate policy for the move. Also check with your state's movers & warehouser's association about moving laws in your state. If you are moving across state lines, it is your origination point whose laws apply. Some states really have no protections. Others hold movers to the quotes they provide, or allow only minor increases from their written quotes.

Keep irreplaceable stuff with you:
--passports
--birth, wedding, death, and divorce certificates
--family jewelry
--photo albums (or negatives and/or digital files)
--laptop or hard drive from the desktop or external backup
--priceless souvenirs that you would be heartbroken to lose
--make a note of account numbers (credit cards, insurance policy, etc)

I'd be more worried about using used boxes more than an empty van.

If you're worried about bed bugs, park the loaded moving van in the sun, close it up tight, and let it sit. Bed bugs die at 113 degrees.
