Here's another idea for small things, like eating utensils, office supplies, etc---

go to the post office, you can get shipping boxes for free! Or you can order them online, www.usps.gov the boxes are small, like 13 x 9, various sizes, perfect for papers, kitchen utensils, etc.
yes but highly illegal

We had marvelous success in a big move in 2005 with boxes from U-Line.com

Awesome place, boxes of EVERY size and purpose. Specific sizes for:
- Books
- LP's
- Dishes
- Glasses and stemware (aka "DishPaks" with inner dividers)
- Clothes on hangers.
- Clothing / bedding.
- Lamps
- Electronics

All of the accessory stuff too:
- Bubble wrap.
- Brown kraft paper.
- Tape.

We packed-out ourselves, almost 300 cartons (hell, we had 60 cartons of books), and United Van Lines gave us 65% off the full-tariff rate. We also took extra insurance for full-replacement value.

Towards the end of packing, we got a few boxes from the U-Haul store, but wow, they charge a lot, as do all the local stores.

If you plan to pack-out on your own, measure your items and order boxes from U-Line to fit them. We had a lot of books. The recommend box for books, which are heavy, is a box about (IIRC) 18x12x8High. This allows for two stack of books in a box and will weight 25-40 pounds when full. General rule of thumb is to measure how many linear feet of shelf space and every 16 inches is roughly equal to a box of books.

I work in a store, the last time I moved, I brought boxes home from there for my room mate to pack her stuff up. I really don't have anything to move of my own--I live a very Spartan lifestyle.
