Any suggestions on the best route to take. We are driving one car, with kids and pets.

East (Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, TN, Atlanta...) or South (New Mexico, TX, New Orleans, Fl) .

We found out the South is longer, but don't now if there is any particular suggestion or reason to be better.

Any comments?

This time of year, it's six of one, half-dozen of the other.

The major positive thing about the "southern" route (to me) is that you avoid Atlanta. You can also easily skip the congestion of Dallas, Houston and New Orleans.

My personal preference would be the eastern route. Crossing New Mexico and Texas feels like it takes twice as long as it does because of the emptiness and the mile after mile of identical terrain. At least the upper route is green and, in parts, rolling. But again, that's just my view of it.

I would cross using the eastern Route, simply because New Mexico, Texas etc. are REALLY flat and boring to look at, trust me, I've crossed them and I nearly fell asleep at the wheel several times in New Mexico alone.

Funny, to me Kansas, Illinois etc. are boring compared to the beauty of New Mexico and west Texas. So when I moved from Colorado to Florida 10 years ago I took the southern route because I knew I was going to miss my mountains and wide open spaces, and I stopped along the way at places I wanted to see but previously had never gotten to.

I drove from Miami to Denver and I took the East route. I'm quite sure its the fastest route although its a really boring drive. Driving through Atlanta isn't bad at all, I almost always gain time in ATL because I can drive 100+ without having to even look for a cop.

Time is always more important than views.. in reality you're still driving and you'd be mad at yourself either way. good choice in my opinion

Has anyone taken the southern route and stayed in pet friendly hotels/motels along the way?
