I usually see American Apparel in college towns, but not always. Why is this store not in cities like Davis or Chico? What other college towns lack a urban outfitters or American Apparel.

I usually see them in large cities and I know why. Most college students can't afford to shop at that place regularly.
Maybe one sees American Apparel in areas with high amount of college aged people. For example, American Apparel is in areas where there aren't any main colleges but there happens to be a good sized hipster population.
What cities can you think of that have high amounts of college aged students or alot of graduate students? Usually I guess this store looks for college students with enough income to shop there. I noticed not every major city has this store. Sacramento and Fresno in California both don't have one. Also, San Jose does not have one but Santa Clara does.
In California, I know these cities are very college orientated:
San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly SLO and Cuesta College)
Santa Cruz (UC Santa Cruz)
Santa Barbara (UC Santa Barbara and Santa Barbara City College)
Malibu (Pepperdine)
Palo Alto (Stanford)
Napa (Corbin Bleu)
Claremont (Pomona College and other small private universities)
In other states-
Madison (University of Wiscosin)
Euegene (University of Oregon)
Boulder (University of Colorado)
Columbus (University of Ohio)

I don't think Sacramento and Fresno are "major" cities outside California. Size and demographics matter though. Look at how many the Miami metro has for example. Then look at the fact Austin TX has it.

Well I looked up an article on them and it says their customers age from 16-30. High school to college graduate students.
All though, Davis and Chico are both college towns and they don't even have an Urban Outfitters.
So perhaps wealth and amount of customers has alot to do with it all.
