To much financial problems with building taller than the Burj right now.

Dubai hasn't learned it's lesson yet. Overbuilding, vacancy rate high, and their economy is terrible, they sank and had to get bailed out, and still haven't made a full recovery and they're still building as if they have money flowing in to do so.

It is also easier to build one if you are in an autoritarian/totalitarian state as well. It isn't so much we can or can't but weather we need one? It is easier engineering-wise to have the same amount of office space in several buildings than on one tall building. There is also the issue that most of these other countries have space and development issues that make building such buildings more nessecary. (except Dubai)

Also I can't help but wonder what Freud would think about all of this?

Ya its crazy. The empire state building,which was the burj dubai of its time, didn't start turning profits till the seventies i think The thing was built in 1933. I cant imagine whats the fate of the burj

The US won't get the tallest building again unless it finds a way to recapture the growth of wealth in the world. The economies of Asia are so rapidly expanding that its wealth creation will spawn the majority of the tallest new buildings for some time to come.

"Won't get?" That makes it sound like the tallest building gets awarded to a contest winner!

Let's be honest: why should this country (or any other, for that matter) feel as though it has to enter a competition to put up the world's tallest building? I couldn't care less if such a building stands in New York, or Singapore, or Dubai.

This is a wonderful example of what Kurt Vonnegut called a "granfalloon." (And for anyone who couldn't grasp the concept, he provided a nice little couplet to define it perfectly: If you wish to study a granfalloon/Just remove the skin of a toy balloon.)

Hong Kong is not authoritarian nor does it have particularly cheap labor. It's more because of its wealth, tiny physical size, and huge population. Neither HK nor Shanghai looks to be burning themselves out because they actually are on the ascent when it comes to economic wealth and population growth (these areas aren't just building and letting the buildings sit half vacant). It'd make more sense if you redirected your ire towards Dubai.

Well some of the places that are building such buildings have no way to go but up due to space issues.

I voted NO because I hope we never build anything as ugly as Burj Dubai. That thing is just horrendous looking. If that's the future of supertalls, then count the U.S. out.
