If you got big bucks, then Charlottesvile is fine, AND as the previous poster noted - Virginia is a COMMONWEALTH, so you probably don't want to live here (whatever that's about) Seriously, there are a lot of nice places near the mountains with lots to do, without the outrageous prices and liberal orientation of Charlottesville - try Roanoke, Lynchburg - more southern oriented, cheaper, closer to the mountains.
