We're an interracial couple (he's American, I'm Argentinian) in our late twenties expecting a baby. We're currently living in Ft. Worth, TX but hate it, so we're looking for the opposite (outside of Texas, of course!). My husband is in the IT field and I'm an English/Spanish translator and interpreter. We're looking for a small city or town, and these are the determining factors:
_Good jobs, especially for my husband
_Liberal, open-minded
_Beautiful landscapes/natural scenery
_Excellent food
_Environmentally friendly
_Non-religious (we're atheists)
_Non-racist
_Walkability (we want to be able to get what we need within walking distance)
_Good public schools
_Low crime
_Character (no cookie-cutter houses, no chain stores everywhere, etc)
_Mild climate (cooler is fine)
_Historical architecture
_Cultural diversity
_Family oriented
_Vibrant downtown
I know we're asking too much, but I also know the U.S. is huge, and that there might be some options. Any thoughts or suggestions?
If you don't mind snow, Ithaca NY might be fine. It fits pretty much all of your criteria and is a small city of about 30,000. Visitor Info | Visit Ithaca
Not sure about all criteria, but Madison, WI might be worth checking out. In fact, you may have the best luck by focusing your search on college towns (like Ithaca, as the previous poster replied).
It really depends on how much you can afford. In a fairly recent survey, I think it was 97% of the people living in San Luis Obispo, CA loved living there. It's on the Central Coast 14 miles inland, halfway between SF and LA with a VERY mild climate. Of course it would be expensive to live there. You didn't mention cost as being an issue.
Pittsburgh maybe, though we're generally not very open minded !
