Have you considered Manchester, NH as well... its also a really nice place and closer to Boston, although I still think Portland is probably better. And if your thinking even smaller, Concord is a nice city with an above average bus system.
great culture and people. A city of about 200,000 people, great neighborhoods-look at College Hill and the East Side-absolutely beautiful homes and walking distance to downtown PRovidence which I think is one of the best urban cores in the country.
You'll probably want a car to leave the city-altho the RIPTA [public bus system covers the entire state of RI] is very efficent. YOu can take the MBTA or Amtrak to Boston anytime of day-it's about a 50 min trip-$15 for r/t. BUt yeah, a car to get out of the city is still a good idea. But you can walk to the major conveniences of Providence from the East Side between 10-30mins, but again there is also the RIPTA.
Hi, I've been carfree for a long time and want to relocate. Currently in a small city in the Midwest @50,000 pop. and though I like many things here it doesn't have many cultural resources and it's very far from a larger city with more urban amenities.
I'm interested in some new ideas about what place might work well for me now. I'd like to move to a city around 50,000-100,000 pop., with a vibrant downtown area, decent public transport (bus or train), and access to a larger city with museums, theater, etc., within 2-3 hours transit time.
Especially interested in suggestions in CA or Northeast.
Probably any college town in both areas. In the Northeast, you might like Amherst and Northampton in MA, Kingston RI, New Brunswick NJ, State College PA, along with the 2 chopchop mentioned(Ithaca NY and Burlington VT).
A thing that people forget about Burlington VT is that it is only about an hour from Montreal. So, you can visit a great major city with an etirely different culture too.
Ithaca is great due to a reasonable drive to NYC, Toronto, Philadelphia, DC and other major and mid major cities in and outside of NY State.

Harrisburg and Lancaster, PA both have compact up-and-coming center city areas with farm markets in-town, and frequent rail service to Philadelphia and New York City.

Albany, NY might be worth considering too.
