Not necessarily true, Boise is actually a surprisingly liberal city, but in a conservative state. There is a healthy mix in the Boise Metro area.
Boise and Portland are both larger than the population wish indicated in the first post.
Eugene Oregon is nice and is smaller than Boise and of course Portland.
According to a competitor site which I probably can't name, Boise is 51% republican and 45% democrat. But, who knows if this is even an issue with the OP.
Nice pictures of my hometown; the Unitarian Church, at the head of Church Street; I remember when you could drive a car on this street ( and I did).
For West Coast alternatives, I could guess at Eugene or Corvallis, OR, but I don't know for sure; it might be tough to find a job in a college town with the students coming back for school..
I am interested in moving somewhere I would really thrive. I love trees, and I love the mountains. Bellingham... Hmm... I would love to here more. Also, if anyone can compare and contrast it to Burlington that would be great!
I am going to try and move back to Burlington, but unfortunately jobs are scarce right now.
Those pictures look similar to Ithaca NY's Commons and the fountain reminds me of the one in Clinton Square in Syracuse:
Anyway, Eugene does seem like a very good choice. Maybe places like Pullman WA or Moscow ID might work too.
Eugene, OR-IMO, this is probably the best fit. Very green and hippyish, great town.
Boise, ID-not quite as liberal, but has a great vibrant downtown
Arcata, CA-one of my favorite places on earth, the ultimate hippy town.
Santa Cruz, CA-definitely touristy, but would definitely fit your criteria
Bellingham, WA-a college town in northern washington, honestly don't know much about it.
