Not sure that I am actually going to move at this stage but I was hoping I could get some suggestions on what cities/areas sound like they would be a good fit.

Would like mild winters and preferably mild summers, but would rather mild winters than summers if I had to choose. Would want to be in an area that is moderate to liberal politically. I also want to live in an area that is reasonably affordable (am currently in Boston). I would also like to be in an area that has a good school system for children (don't have any yet, but would like to).

Both mild winters and mild summers and somewhat liberal politics: I understand many areas of the West Coast have both mild winters and mild summers-- from central California up thru Oregon and Washington. The downside is that parts of CA have a high cost of living -- and WA and OR have a lot of rain / mist as well as high unemployment. But I'm far from being an expert on the West Coast. Others have much better knowledge than I.

Yeah the west coast seems right. I live in Portland. The winters are grey and dreary. It drizzles like everyday in the winter but never rains so hard that an umbrella is needed. Snows maybe a week a year if we get lucky. The summers are nice. Schools are good, and very little crime. Very liberal so no need to worry about that. However if I were you I would consider northern California. Bay area is way more interesting and slightly better weather. More crime and the schools aren't always great, but there's always something to do. I used to live in the east bay and it was very nice.
