Us ocean dwellers often refer to the vast fields, sparse cities and sprawling states of the mid-west and great plains, as to an obstacle in our way to Califronia or New York.

I now know why.

In Missouri, every billboard was a reference to owning a gun, Jesus Christ and/or Obama the Muslim-socialist-commie.

In Oklahoma, we were met with indifference and a slight air of "why are you here?"

In Texas, we were abhorred. We were looked on as if we had two heads, each more "liberal" than the other.

In general the people acted as if we were from another planet. We weren't welcomed.

In the northeast and the west coast, people generally don't make other people's affairs their own personal problems. God and Jesus are never part of a debate, our faith is in our good works and deeds, not our devotion to a religion or church. Northeasteners keep to themsevles and west coasters are happy-go-lucky.

But Middle America there seemed to be this highly insular attitude. That if it couldn't be boiled down to Christ, a gun and conservativism, it simply didn't matter to them. And if you weren't one of them, forget it.

I would have liked my person stereotypes to be broken down, but I feel even more resolved in my beliefs about middle america. Conservatives say that America is about it's heartland. I have to graciously disagree. How could people who have never left their countystate, put all their faith in an insular community, and are uneducated about the world around them represent the other 2/3 of us who simply don't follow those stereotypes.
Lmkcin, I am sorry to say this, but maybe you already had a preconceived stereotype to what you would find in these other states. In other words, you found exactly what you were looking for.

I also travel around the country, and I have to say that I never really had a problem. Maybe because I am a political moderate I overlook things. And religious signs and churches not only don't bother me, but it is often a sign that good people are in the area.

Maybe you are young and were getting into political debates with people, I don't know. But one thing I learned over the years is to TRY to respect other people's opinions even when you disagree with them.

Why would anyone leave New England for Cal in the first place, it don't make no sence?
I think Lmkcin is (was) from western Massachusetts. No one should be mentioning NYC/The Bronx on this thread (KONY!). Btw OCEAN DWELLER, LoL.

As for your last sentence, I am wondering the same thing. Lmkcin ia a big history buff and loves Massachusetts and Boston. And California is in really bad shape atm. Still, I am sure the OP has a good reason.

I stand by what I wrote about Middle America. You're all archaic, insular, and a little self-engrandizing.
I looked over your history of posts - interesting. Pardon me, but your posts make it hard to take you too seriously. To judge an entire section of our country, based on your preconceived prejudices, after seeing a very small portion of it, speaks for itself. I believe that you feel your viewpoints are all that matters - pretty narrow-minded seeming (and a little archaic and insular), if you ask me.

One other thing, Imkicin, isn't the mantra of liberalism to be accepting, tolerant and respectful of EVERYONE? Am I correct in thinking that, or not? Kumbaya and Peace.

Dude, you just graduated college.

Come talk to us about how worldly you are when you're positive all your adult teeth are in.

Spend some time in a small town with an open mind. You have no idea how many special experiences, traditions, and fun times you're missing. Spoken from experience.

Why exactly do you have such a problem with the religious expression? There's nothing wrong with folks living as the Bible says. I know that runs contrary to the main tenets of liberalism and being your own boss and all. Ha, I have done so many things regarding religious expression that would make liberals cringe. I discuss my faith with people, I develop relationships with them, and I kindly tell them that in the grand scheme of things, 80+ years on this earth is a vapor compared to eternity...are they ready to "punch out?"

The sad thing is, I've gotten blasted on this site for even having religious beliefs! Apparently the fact that I am religious and believe there's an afterlife makes me uneducated, a bigot, and "dangerous" to the country. Pretty shocking...especially when I even got meself a good ol' educashin!! Double degrees oh my goodness!!!

But dahling, in this case the error went directly to erase the image of debonair continent-touring that you were so vainly seeking to build up. It was all too much to pass by for one so often witness to all that defines the reality of the matter.
Well, Sag, only an arrogant liberal would mistake me for a "debonair continent touring" person. I am far, far from that and am through and through midwestern white trash. I do not put on pretenses, as I don't give a damn what anyone else says. Despite my travels, I like to stay home with my family and do not seek or crave the approval of others, nor do I like social gatherings.

Arrogant libs, on the other hand, thrive on the false presentation of "superiority" (it satifies thier own lack of confidence in themselves) and seek constant self assurance from thier liberal clan. Thus the constant socialiizing and reaffirmation of one's insane values among others of like mind.

Keep up on those spelling errors, Sag- it is a hilarious and is a universal "symptom" of the liberal illness. I'll keep throwing out those lures for you- you hit on them and I'll release you back into the water again, only to make a fool of yourself on yet another instance.

Dallas Texas Liberal here, dismayed an lmkcin's terrible post of hateful stereotypes and lies about Middle America, and also dismayed that many people have, as Katiana has pointed out, taken the ramblings of one jerk (and is lmkcin ever a jerk!) and attributed it to the whole of liberals in America.

Sigh.

Man, if you came to New York where I live, I would probably treat you worse than the middle Americans supposedly did since you seem to be a huge tool. You should leave your insular attitude at home next time and travel with an open mind, because you are clearly uneducated about the world around you. Either that, or you're just a troll.
