Why do Southern states have highest smoking rates? (buy, restaurants)

I think we should be more concerned with AIR pollution...water pollution etc....which affects everyone, as we destroy our planet and use up it's resources.
Just what we need...another defensive response from a Southerner instead of one acknowledging there is a problem
Good gawd! The REAL problem is the mindset in this country today that harmless vices are a "problem" that need be addressed by some governmental entity.
So what if Southerners tend to smoke more? How is THIS a concern of yours AZ, in the sense it is a "problem" that needs correcting?
Defensive response, my a$$ There is nothing to get defensive about. To be blunt, it is none of anybody's damn business, much less anything to pontificate about.
I think in states with low tobacco rates it is heavily taxed and regulated. Utah seems health-conscious maybe due to the Mormon influence. In California cigarettes are practically outlawed even at the beach and city parks. These restrictions definitely work to curb a deadly habit.

Marijuana, is not an addicting substance, people act like it is.
I've only done it 7 times before in my life, lol. Comprehensively its not something I am addicted to.
I have never touched anything else before though, besides Alcohol. I have never messed with Cigarettes either, and never will. That kills.

Like most kids who came of age during the early 70's I tried pot smoking a bit...but just never really got into it. I stuck to beer for my buzz! LOL
I was though, a fairly heavy cigarette smoker (starting at about age 15) for quite a few years. I finally kicked the habit completely about 6 or 7 years ago. Glad I did, but it wasn't easy. Seems like I read one time that, on a "scale" ranking the most addicting substances, that nicotine ranked right up crack cocaine as to the top spot.
I quit cigarettes a while ago. It was easy once I switched to American Spirits, 'cause they don't have any additives. Switching from Camels to Spirits was harder than actually quitting tobacco altogether!
Pot on the other hand... I still enjoy that, but I quit a while back in order to get clean so that I can find another job in order to relocate. I miss it though. It was the only thing that ever helped me with my frequent nausea and fatigue, plus I enjoy the taste and feeling of good quality pot.
There is nothing unethical nor wrong with smoking pot, IMO. Only when it is abused or misused. I realize now that the US government is run by a bunch of manipulative (zionist) criminals, so I don't ever feel badly about my choices anymore.
