Thanks for posting the map!
No one ever thinks of St Louis as an important stop on the spread of the blues, but it was, and still is!

Agreed. When i think of soul music the first palces that pop in my head are detroit, chicago, philly and L.A. along with memphis and georgia which are the only places in the south on my little list

All I know for sure is... it isn't trance, pop, disco, rap or hip hop.

what people need to understand is that, yes, there are other major cities that are considered hubs of soul music; but at the same time, these cities are only branches of it. soul music (as well as jazz) is rooted in the south

Their children were only a few years removed from that migration.
Motown was founded in 1959.
It takes much longer for a whole new genre, or style of music to evolve, more than a decade.
You keep on saying that Motown is Midwestern, physically it may be, but Motown totally took its sound and style from Southern R&B, and Southern Gospel.
Bingo. Sure Michael's generation of the Jackson family was born in Gary, Indiana. But do you know where Joe and Katherine were from? Arkansas and Alabama. I'm sorry but you don't change that quick, you can't tell me there wasn't southern influence in what they sang in those early years.

btw, anybody that thinks that soul music doesn't have roots in the south is mistaken. It's branched out more than the other genres due to the great migration, and it has taken on many different forms over the years, but the majority of music most associated with black culture, with the notable exception of Hip-Hop, has roots in the South. Where was James Brown, the Godfather of Soul from? While it isn't exclusively southern, like some of the other genres listed, to erase the Southern beginnings is a huge mistake.

True. You have soul music; than you have different variations of soul music, but soul music is the base.
