I definitely sometimes splurge on the snacks there... That is how they get you. Go in with a few items in mind walk out with an entire cart of stuff.
I rarely get out of Trader Joe's without spending at least $75 -- and the stores in Pa. don't sell beer or wine (alas). But I don't go to TJs that often, so I stock up on the foods that I do like to buy there. And when I visit friends and family in Ohio and Michigan, I stock up on the wine and beer.
And then there's the triple ginger cookies, and the dark chocolate bar from the display near the checkout counter ... How did those get into my bag? LOL
Just a question but aren't whole foods basically everywhere - I mean it seems like there is one every few miles
There are only 293 Whole Foods. They skip several counties in California. I think only 18 counties in California have them and some counties only have one. The larger counties with have several in the more populated and wealthy cities. Trader Joes are more abundant.

We don't have any of those stores in our area. Like I said, we have Wegmans, which is arguably one of the best supermarkets in the country.

Well then we need competition over in the West Coast. In California, there is also Gelson's Markets which is very high end. When I'm in the East Coast again sometime I'll have to check Wegman's out.
I like Whole Foods. I don't think its an increase in wealth. We're still going through a recession remember? However I think its people are becoming more environmentally conscious and also as mentioned just wanting to be healthier. I don't do my regular grocery shopping at Whole Foods but I love their food bars.

I just discovered Wegmans. A great grocery store for those like me who don't cook. Its a HUGE store and seems to be growing despite the economy. People gotta eat. When I lost my job my spending on food was NOT the first thing to go, but my time eating out at nice restaurant was. So its a sign of the times. People want to save money eat out less but still eat good yummy food.

Not everywhere. Particularly in smaller or mid-sized cities.
My hometown Columbus, GA doesn't have a Whole Foods and I doubt it will anytime soon, but Fresh Market just opened down there. Which from my understanding is very similar to Whole Foods.

The Fresh Market is a great alternative if you don't have a Whole Foods. Their stores are clean, well stocked and carry quality products.
