Houston and DFW have the strongest economies in the country right now, and with the way things are looking, its not gonna change anytime soon. Houston and DFW are the future. And Chicago and Houston ARE comparable, big cities, big populations, big business, world cities. If any city in the South should be compared to Chicago its Houston, Houston has the most urban feel in the South. LA doesnt have as much history as Chicago, but last I checked LA is known more in the world than Chicago.
Ive noticed, LA just doesnt get respect on this site. I just wonder why? LA is amazing, i go there so much yet i never get tired of it. beach, beautiful women, Kobe, hollywood, mountains, its soooo chill there.

As far as the major cities of Houston, Dallas, Atlanta, and Miami. I would say Miami and Houston would be around a tie. Miami is much more dense than Houston but they live around the car.
But the best urban feel in the south has to be New Orleans. There is nothing like it in the south.
Under the current rate of growth and if it remains steady, Atlanta MSA will have a population of 9 million.
We have a current growth rate of 129,000 per year.
Now if you factor in the illegal aliens, which is currently projected at 500,000, and with their current growth rate, we will probably be about 15 million.
15 million? Yeah right. Atlanta doesn't get that many illegals either. It is a mostly Black and White metro area. Atlanta's growth will slow down. People are going to realize that living 70 miles outside of Atlanta won't work.

Yea Atlanta is gonna get big, but nothing compared to Hou and DFW. Atlanta is a great city in its own right but, its a regional hub, while DFW and Houston are well on their way to significant global roles. Atlanta will probably slow in growth in about 4 or 5 years. Nowadays as the global markets are opening up, diversity in American cities is very important in their growth. and 15 million is waaaaay toooo high, Houston and DFW wont even get that high by 2030 so im more than sure ATL wont.
I frankly don't see the LA metro area growing that much over the next few decades. The cost of living is outrageous now, and there is an exodus out of that area into Nevada and Arizona that began a few years back, and I think it will be steady enough over the years that the population will remain static, or at least not gain as much as predicted. Also, I have seen projections about Orlando (very small by the standards here) gaining millions by that time, many of them from Miami and the surrounding areas and from all over the country. The Orlando metro is around 2 million now. I see more of the midsized cities (Seattle, Nashville, Las Vegas, Tampa, etc.) getting much of the emigration in the coming years.
